Mommy and Hugh's early morning nap

Since Hugh still gets up at 5 a.m. for an early-morning bottle, I find it necessary to do an early-morning nap. After feeding Hugh, we lay down and nap until the 8 a.m. feeding. That seems to be the only way I can maintain my sanity!

Old phone (LG) versus new phone (Samsung Galaxy S)
Jason and I finally caved in and got smartphones. I didn't necessarily need a smartphone, but I desperately needed a new phone. My little LG was well-loved. And no longer functioning properly. It would have a full battery but turn off for hours on end. On its own. I would be sitting on the couch with a full bar, and yet it would constantly lose the call. Since, Jason and I do not have a land line, having a working cell phone is a must. The plan wasn't that much more, and the phone wasn't too expensive. So, we took the plunge and got phones that are way too complex for us, lol!

We inherited some gorgeous red lillies with the house and they are in full bloom right now. I love these flowers. I don't have to do anything to them; they come back faithfully year after year. That's my kind of plant!

Still learning how to use the fancy phone...

Thursday, I met up with MiMi, Amelia, Abigail, Adam, and Jason for lunch at Sweet Peppers. Yum. Then Hugh and I went to Target to get some gifts. We found Jason the coolest Father's Day gift. More to come on that later.

Jason had to work Saturday, so on his way home he stopped by Corner Market to get a few things. And, he picked up something special for us to snack on - Spicy Shrimp Sushi. I avoided sushi throughout my pregnancy since it is on the no-no list (though it really is uncooked sushi, but I played it safe and avoided all). Therefore, this was an extra special treat. And it was super good!

Sunday we celebrated Jason's first Father's Day, but I will save those pictures for another post.

Birthday Wish List

My birthday is next week! My family and I are notorious list-makers, so here's what made it on my birthday wish list this year:

I'm totally in love with this camera tote from JoJo Totes. I am a photographer so I always have my camera on me. But sometimes I don't care to haul around my large, unattractive camera bag. It makes me feel like a tourist. This tote is perfect! I can put my camera, extra lenses, and a few other goodies such as a snack, book, and wallet in this gorgeous tote. And it looks like a regular, but large purse.

*The picture with the person holding the tote is from Danielle Thompson's blog. I first heard of this tote from her.

I love Blythe dolls but they are way over my budget right now. While looking for Blythes, I found something totally awesome...Pullip dolls! I love that these are ball-jointed dolls. This means that you can pose them. I wouldn't recommend these dolls for little kiddos because they are expensive. But for doll collectors, these are a must. I really love this one!

I'm always asking for art supplies. The latest goodies on my list are 1. Golden Crackle Paste - I can't believe I haven't bought this yet, but I would love to add some crackle in my mixed media work. 2. PanPastel Artists’ Painting Pastels Sets - I've heard these are absolutely amazing pastels. I would love to start out with at least the 10-piece set. 3. Golden Fluid Acrylics, 1 oz - specifically Turquoise and Quinacridone Red.

And a few other goodies: 1. Re-ment Dining Table - for 1:6 dolls (such as Barbie, Blythe, or Pullip). 2. Ranger Craft Spinner - to hold all my ink blending tools. 3. Re-ment Display Kitchen - another goodie for 1:6 dolls.

A couple of other things I asked for are some Copic Sketch Markers, a gift certificate to Papertrey Ink, and a gift certificate to Two Peas in a Bucket.

Of course, I don't expect everything on this list! I am realistic, after all. These are some things that have inspired me lately that I would love to play with.

Hello 2010.

New Years cereal : Christy Sheffield

Good morning 2010. Right now I'm kind of being lazy. Still in the pajamas. Editing some photos from August. (Yes, I know...I'm way behind.)

I've been thinking about some goals for this year. Here's some I've come up with...

+ Work in my art journal weekly. Found some great art journaling prompts here and here.

+ Learn to crochet.

+ Finish my dollhouse.

+ Practice drawing more using Illustration Friday's weekly prompts.

+ Learn how to use my digital SLR camera. I'm starting Maggie Holmes' class in a few days. Super excited about that.

+ Simplify my scrapbooking process. Tell more stories. Capture life. I plan on utilizing Becky Higgin's Project Life to make this a reality. LOVE this idea.

+ A picture a day.

+ Unpack EVERY SINGLE box in the house that has been sitting here since we got married in 2007. Yikes.

+ Repaint the studio and make fabric poms and curtains to match. I'm thinking gray, turquoise, watermelon, and yellow.

+ Update Quicken weekly instead of waiting until the end of the month.

+ Write in my prayer journal daily.

+ Memorize more scripture.

+ Get rid of the personal gym that we inherited when we bought the house (thanks Adam and Amelia) so we can fix up the shop that it's sitting in.

+ Start a vegetable garden.

+ And, most importantly...BE MORE LIKE CHRIST.

What are your goals for 2010?

Goodbye 2009. Hello 2010.

Goodbye 2009. I am rather glad to see you go because you really weren't my favorite year. Too many downs and not enough ups.

It has been so long since I have posted that Typepad has changed its editor. Not that I was lost, only dazed for a second.

So, why the long absence? I took some time away from blogging because I had a lot going through my head. And, I've decided to be honest with you. My doctor diagnosed me with depression and anxiety issues. Before you get alarmed, it wasn't anything bordering suicidal. Just mild...but mild enough to interfere with my daily life.

I stopped taking care of the house. I stopped taking care of myself. I avoided phone calls. I barely got on facebook. I never got on twitter. I avoided my blog because I felt that it would expose me. I stopped creating. So, I got help.

I'm feeling so much better now and am getting my life in order. I've been working on the house, cleaning up and catching up on the pile of laundry on the floor in the master bedroom. I also filled in twice for some teachers on maternity leave. That kept me busy, but I was thankful for the busyness of it all because it kept me focused.

And I've started crafting some stuff. Amazing...I feel so alive when I'm crafting something. I love to bring beauty into the world...even if I am the only one who appreciates it. Making something gives me a glimpse of how our Heavenly Father must feel...beaming with love and pride over His precious creation. Some stuff we find beautiful, like a sunset or a rose. Other things we find disgusting, like the homeless person who hasn't showered in months. But He finds it all beautiful.

Joy.

So, goodbye 2009. I learned a lot from you but I'd rather not relive it. And, hello 2010. I embrace you with open arms, ready to refresh and re-energize myself.

Many thanks…

Thank you everyone who left kind comments on my last post. Your encouraging words really help. So far nothing has panned out, but I am reminding myself that "no" isn't necessarily a rejection of me but rather a closed door. I'm trudging forward with the help of many prayers and loving family members. I have one other opportunity that I'm checking on today. It's not a teaching position, but it is at a school. The pay would be relative to what I made as an assistant teacher (aka not much at all), but it is more than a minimum wage job at a store, plus I would have time off during Christmas and Thanksgiving. If that doesn't work out, then I've considered applying somewhere like Hobby Lobby or Michaels so that I have some sort of income until I figure things out.

For the last few weeks I've been hit and miss with the Internet. Sorting of taking a break. With all that's happened, I've been down in the dumps so it has been hard to get motivated. I hope to spend this week doing some crafting because I miss it. And, it really is a great way to relieve some stress.

In the meantime, I'm editing and uploaded some neat pics that I will share soon.

Gulf Shores and More

**This is a very long post because I'm sharing a lot today. If you are only interested in seeing pictures from my recent trip to Gulf Shores, Alabama then you will need to scroll down.**

Last week Jason and I headed to Gulf Shores to visit his cousin and her husband, who serve as  missionaries to the Gulf Shores region. Nathan does many, many things, but we went to help with day camps that are run at some of the RV parks. It was a great experience – nothing strenuous, so it was incredibly relaxing.

Dolphin-02
I will share more about Gulf Shores, but before I do I need to share something else.

To be quite honest, this has been a very hard summer for me. I don't do a great job of sharing my personal stories here on this blog, so let me fill you in on what has been going on. As some of you know, I have worked several jobs since graduating, but for the last two years I have worked as a kindergarten assistant. My degrees are in communication and business administration, but after working in business I felt that it was not for me. I've always loved teaching (in fact, I wanted to be a teacher when I was a child), so I tried my hand as an assistant teacher. To clarify, Mississippi does not require that you have a degree in education to be an assistant. You have to have either 48 hours of college credit (which having two degrees, I had no problem filling that requirement) or you have to pass some test.

Though kindergarten is an exhausting grade, I loved being around the students and I loved teaching. I was very blessed to be with two teachers who encouraged me in that area and allowed me to do more than just running copies off. I was able to lead centers and create activities for students who fell out of the norm, either very behind or far ahead.

So, I began working on becoming certified to teach. Now, I had a bachelors and master's degree, so I was not inclined to begin working on yet another degree. I was not opposed to it, but I was tired of being in school. Mississippi has a program where if you have a college degree, you can become certified to teach via the "alternate route." I took some classes, took the required tests, and now am certified to teach 4th-8th grade. (Of course, after starting my program, one of the local universities began an online program for assistant teachers to become certified with a bachelor's degree, but since I was already in my program I didn't choose that option.)

Of course, who could know that the country, especially the state of Mississippi, would be in such an economic crisis? Sure, if I wanted to move to the Delta I could easily have a job. But, I wasn't about to move – first of all, my program required me to be within so many miles of my school for my first year of teaching, and second, Jason and I were not about to move. He has just been promoted, so end of discussion.

As I write this post I am still jobless. I have had one interview, but it didn't work out because of budget issues with the school (they had two teachers for one grade, but only needed one, so they ended up filling the open position in another grade with that teacher). I've had several encouraging friends remind me that most new teachers are in the same boat as I am, and that they know so-and-so who was hired two days before school started.

And, while that is encouraging, I have to admit that the waiting is still extremely hard. Some days are good and some are bad. Because as I continue to wait, our income and savings decreases. Assistant teachers are not paid during summer months. You can see why I am so eager to know what is next in my life. I've already thought about some options if nothing works out, but right now I'm stuck in what feels like a purgatory – just waiting and waiting for what is next, not able to move yet, just stuck.

I know that the Lord is going to provide for me, though it might not be what I planned. That is the hope that gets me through this. But it has been a struggle. And being stuck at the house for two months has not helped. Don't get me wrong – I would love to be at home. But when ends are barely meeting and I don't have the money to get together with my friends for lunch or go on trips, I end up feeling very alone.

That is why the trip to see Nathan and Alicia was very much necessary for me. It was so good to help them out, but it was also good to see dear friends and be somewhere different for a change. During the morning we worked a day camp (like a mini-VBS or backyard Bible club) at one of the RV camps. **Moment of praise – One little girl accepted Christ as her Savior. How awesome!**

On the last day of our trip we went to the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo. This was the first trip to a zoo for Zach, Alicia and Nathan's little boy who is two years old.

Here are some of my favorite pictures from the zoo.

GopherTurtle-02

Here is a Gopher turtle, which is an endangered species. Every now and then you can find one around where we live. Camp Shelby does a lot with gopher turtles, to help them repopulate.

Goat-02

This was one crazy goat. Seriously. The zoo had certain areas that were called "puff feeding areas." You could buy $2 worth of puff feed, and feed animals such as donkeys, llamas, sheep, deer, and…goats. You might think he looks like an average goat, but this sucker was HUGE! He was the size of a horse. He would stand on the fence and lean over trying to steal the puff cup out of your hand. Let me show you.

Here are some more of my favorites. (You can click on any of these photos or to visit the entire set on flickr.)

Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo 07-15-09

After the zoo (and a hurried lunch at the most upscale McDonald's I've ever been in – flat screens, aquarium, gaming system), Jason and I went on a dolphin cruise. If you are ever in the Gulf Shores area, I highly recommend it. Two boats go out at one time and split up to search for dolphins. When a boat spots some, the driver radios the other boat and the two boats team up, riding side by side to create a wake that the dolphins love to swim and jump in.

Dolphin Cruise 07-15-09

Jason and I had a great time searching for dolphins and we were lucky enough to end up on the side that, three out of four times, faced the middle, so we got great pictures of the dolphins. We even saw a momma dolphin with her baby.

Thank you, Nathan and Alicia, for allowing us to come and serve with you (and providing food and a place to stay while we were there). It was a lovely mini-vacation for us and very refreshing for me to get away for a little bit.

Two years

23

Two
years ago we said I do. Everyone says the first years are the hardest,
and we believe them. But, we would not trade it for anything in the
world. Thank you, Jason, for your love and support. And, most of all,
for your commitment you made two years ago. I love you.

Sick.

I'm home sick today. Stomach virus. So this makes 2 for 2 working at an elementary schools - been there two years, gotten the stomach virus two years. Great.

You know my favorite thing about the stomach virus? The gourmet food. Sprite and saltine crackers. Yum. Wait, maybe it's the constant struggle between feeling hot and feeling cold that I love. I don't know...both are winners. :(

What Kind of Reader Are You?
Quiz Created on GoToQuiz

Today is the first day since Tuesday that I have been online or checked email. I've been studying all week, trying to remember all that I've been reading in preparation for the Praxis II test today. My goodness, the stuff you learn from 4th-8th grade! It's incredible. Too much to remember, in fact! I'm hoping that I passed the test.

This morning was incredibly frustrating. I was told to report to the testing facility at 7:30 a.m. PROMPT. So, like any studious person, I was there early. I found the room and got settled, waiting for the proctors to show. They showed up at 7:25 and asked all of us to get our stuff and exit the room so that they could properly check us in. I completely understand why, but did it require us standing out in the hall for 25 MINUTES until they got the room in order? They were well aware of how many test takers there would be. Why did they arrive earlier and have the room set up?

So, after standing in a 100 degree hallway for literally 25 minutes, we were all allowed back in and assigned seats. Then we sat and waited more, because we could not start the test until everyone arrived OR until 8 p.m. Two people were missing, so we sat until 8:00. During that time they allowed anyone who needed to use the restroom to do so. However, one MORON with his bluetooth set left the room and was gone for quite some time. And, we had to wait for him to come back before we started. So we didn't even start the test until 8:20. And, of course, I could not leave until the entire test time was up. I'm a pretty quick test taker (you either know it or you don't), so I finished the test with a little under an hour left
. Then I went back and checked my answers, making sure that I didn't get off-track somehow on the bubble answer sheet. Did all of that and still had 20 minutes to go. HOW BORING!

Here's the thing. I have to pass this test in order to get my teacher's certification. If I don't pass, I take it again (for another WHOPPING $80!!!). I have no clue how I did. Even though I took several practice tests, I don't know what I would have scored. See, the company that administers the praxis exam gives out different versions each time the test is administered. And, as not to punish those who receive a harder test, the answers are scaled. For example, you might get 100 out of 120 questions right, but that's not your final score. Your final score depends on the level of difficulty of your exam.

Can you understand my frustration?

But now that's finished and I won't know the score until February. I can finally get the stack of DVDs and books that have been calling my name. Oh yeah, and my school work.

If I were an elf…

...my name would be Eruaphadriel (Air-oo-ah-fahd-ree-ell). Good thing I'm not an elf because I'm pretty sure that would have stumped my teachers.

If you are a girl, you can find out your name in elvish here.

Oh, and (in case your're wondering) I also figured out which Lord of the Rings character I am:

I'm Samwise Gamgee!

Cynical and clumsy, but loyal and brave, you're Samwise Gamgee!

"I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you and it as well. So up you get! Come on, Mr. Frodo dear! Sam will give you a ride. Just tell him where to go, and he'll go."

Which hobbit in the fellowship of the Ring are you?

And which race I am:

I'm a Hobbit!

Though technically not your own race, you represent what's most enjoyable and best in the Lord of the Rings world. Your love, spirit and selflessness are unsurpassed among your Middle Earth brethren.

Which Lord of the Rings race are you?

I had better stop. I don't want anybody thinking I'm a huge Lord of the Rings nerd, I mean, fan.

I did it.

Yup, I have committed an evil crime. I finally succumbed to...Facebook. I haven't cared to join for a couple of reasons. First, I already have a blog that I try to keep up with. Of course, I'm not always successful. So I figure, why add something else to that mix. Second, there is a lot of drama in our school district with employees using social networking sites inappropriately and, although I would never think to post anything inappropriate or divulge any information about my students, I don't want to get into any trouble.

But, the problem is that a lot of my friends use Facebook and do not have a blog. And the only way to keep up with them is to have an account. So there, I finally just made an account. I hope you guys know how much you mean to me, that I would break my rule so I could keep up with you! (Sorry, Nikki, but I just had to do it. I hope you'll understand. Keep holding strong! Oh and be prepared because I'm sure Facebook will once again come up in conversation when we're all at Mom's house. Sorry to do it to ya.)

To all my Facebook friends, I hope you know that there is a lot of sarcasm and wit in this post. Please do not think that I believe Facebook is from satan. I do not. It's just an inside joke.

It’s been a LONG day…

...and this is how I feel.

102108-Tired

I have so many ideas running through my head and I can barely keep up with them all. So, I've been making list after list of to-dos, ideas, etc. Hopefully when I have more time and aren't so tired (aka haven't been in a kindergarten room or subbing all day long) I'll remember exactly what I was thinking when I jotted the note down. Maybe.

I'm very behind on posting and on updating my Flickr account, so I promise those things are to come. Believe me, I have a lot to say and a lot of pictures (courtesy of my new CAMERA!!!).

Also, I've joined Twitter. Really cool. Heard about it in an Andy Stanley sermon where he mentioned that if you want to reach out to the younger generation (Generation M or whatever letter they are called) you pretty much have to instant message and Twitter. I thought, what the heck? But it's pretty cool. Kind of like facebook but not so "scandalous" at my workplace. See what I'm doing to the right.

Oh yeah, and I got tired of how my blog looked. Trying to simplify, so yet another change has been made. And, I've made a MemoryWorks blog. Plus a Wonderfully Created Ministries blog coming soon...a somewhat-new-yet-not-so-much urge I've felt in my heart. A way to combine my desire to reach others and my love of scrapbooking. More info coming soon.

More stuff later. Peace.

Blogger MIA!

There's a blogger MIA. Anyone seen her?

Okay, seriously, I haven't blogged in a month. Sorry. My mother had a mild heart attack (she's doing great) and since then things have been so busy. So there. There's my excuse for not blogging.

There's a lot going on and I can't reveal it all just yet, but trust me...it's good! My brain has been overflowing with ideas for a new ministry utilizing...you guessed it - scrapbooking! I've got a lot of web stuff I'm working on, plans for pushing some photography stuff once I get my *NEW* camera (!!!!!!), and taking some time in between all of my ideas to create my fall wreath (to be revealed soon) and plan a fiesta.

It's been a while since I've been inspired and I've been a little overwhelmed by a desire to create, yet no motivation. I think it's because too much has been going on. But, things have normalized now...kindergarten has become somewhat routine after a couple of weeks of craziness. So, look for some creative play soon.

Weekend Update

Here's an update for those of you who don't know what happened. Weekend goes like this. Nikki came over Friday to go through the garage-sale-now-giving-to-charity load of junk in the spare 'oom. Got it done, now just waiting for Christian Services to come pick it up. HORRIBLE thunderstorm comes through. She hangs around until it's mostly done. Within minutes of her leaving, the fridge starts smoking. Turns out a wire pretty much melted. Dad comes and checks it out, wraps the wire. That night I notice it's kind of warm in the house, but assume that I'm just hot from all of the commotion. Get up the next morning...still HOT. Turns out the outside AC unit is screwed up. This is NOT the ac unit we had replaced just last october. So once again we are without air. But Mom's 1980s fans are still coming in handy. Oh yeah, did I mention that all of this happened while Jason was out of town?

Here's a few pics from the weekend.

P6260004

It's much cooler outside and Pedro would have way more fun, but he insists on sitting/laying/chewing right beside you. Very devoted.

P6260018

Pedro also loves nooks and crannies, so he always gets under the computer desk (or snuggled up on the couch) when I'm not looking. I do not like him under there because he has a bad habit of unplugging things and chewing on things he's not supposed to.

P6270012

This is all of the JUNK going to chairty. Sure love how it made my living room look. Thanks, Nikki, for coming and helping me sort through all of this stuff. I couldn't have done it so quickly without you. And, thanks Dad and John for your help with house issues.

My New Fave Show

We honestly do not watch a ton of TV at our house. Sometimes if I'm cleaning or on the computer I might turn the TV on, but most of the time I'm watching a movie. However, I did find a couple of shows that have been running a while and I'm hooked!

First, Ace of Cakes. This show is awesome! I love watching how they make the most elaborate cakes. Plus the staff is hilarious. They really know how to have fun while working.

Another show I saw last night that I'm hooked on is HGTV's Design Star. And, believe it or not, Jason actually LIKED the show! So, it's a miracle. I've found something on HGTV that Jason likes!

Enjoy!
